Hawaiian Coastlines

I spent a lot of time on Maui taking pictures of the ocean.

The north shore is wild and full of drama:

But the southern coastline is breathtaking in the morning:

Haleakala Crater

We visited Haleakala Crater and were utterly gobsmacked. [I've been looking for a chance to use that word.]

The fog created dramatic contrasts.

We saw silverswords…

…and exotic birds…

[Well, maybe not so very exotic. It was pecking around the parking lot, looking for handouts.]

The Pipiwai Trail

We left Hana early, planning to hike the Pipiwai Trail. On the way to the Seven Sacred Pools, we encountered dramatic waves on Koki Beach.

Then, pretty waterfalls:

The Road to Hana

To get to Hana, we started at Mama’s Fish House:

Ke’Anea Arboretum

On the tortuous road to Hana, a small sign marks the Ke’Anea Arboretum. You can easily miss it or drive on by. But if you’re lucky enough to find the spot, you’ll see fallen blossoms:

…the peeling bark of Indonesian eucalyptus…

…and the twisty roots of ancient trees.
