Kealakekua Bay

On Saturday, we hiked down the coast to Kealakekua Bay.

When we got to the bay, we found the marker commemorating Captain James Cook. I like the neutral phrasing: “Cook met his death.” Sounds much better than what actually happened.

Being more of a geek than a history buff, I kept thinking the plaque should have read “Captain James T. Kirk.”

The snorkeling was very fine. I had a new pair of prescription goggles, which meant that I could actually see the fish in the water. I could see the yellow fishes smiling! Prescription goggles = Absolute Game Changer.

We did not spot any of the famous Humuhumunukunukuāpuaa, as far as I know. But I remember many bright yellow tang fish, glittering like gemstones in the shallow water.
