Drought zone

After spending my summer vacation in a flood zone, I had occasion last week to go to Houston, where there isn’t any flooding, but instead a historic drought. I must have brought the rain gods with me, because it rained for four hours on Sunday, soaking the parched ground. We visited a park near Sam […]

Passing through Prague

I’ve always wanted to visit Prague. We’ve been planning to visit the city for some time, but a funny thing happened on the way to our vacation: we got a chance to scout ahead. My husband found himself traveling to Prague on business, and there wasn’t time for me to come along. So I “visited” […]

Midsummer Road Trip

Random photos from our recent road trip. We drove through the Lutefisk Capital of U.S.A. If you’ve never been forced to eat lutefisk, which is gelatinous cod that’s been soaked in lye, then you are lucky, and you are also unlikely to impressed with this statue: We liked it. We were less impressed with the […]

Holiday in a Flood Zone

I finally have a chance to post some pictures from my vacation. We went to a family reunion in Minnesota, where there was much kayaking and paddle-boating and horseback-riding and family fun. We heard loons in the morning, which made me extremely happy. Much of Minnesota is still faced with extremely high water levels (which […]

Adobe Afternoon

My favorite little courtyard in Albuquerque is right behind The Daily Grind. It’s a great place to drink lattes, enjoy the shade, and encounter magical kitties. I’m not sure what these gears do (perhaps they grind wheat?), but they work well with the flowers, the blue paint, the peeling adobe walls.

High Desert Tea

My week in New Mexico hasn’t been ideal for getting writing done, but like every great vacation, it’s allowed me to empty my brain and refill it again. On Friday, we went to the St. James Tearoom for high tea, and I refilled my brain with scones and clotted cream. In the interest of looking […]

High Desert Market

Saturday was meant to be a hiking day. We’d planned to get up at some ungodly hour on Saturday morning to hike the Pino trail to the top of Sandia Peak, taking the cable car back down. But the Pino trail has been closed for weeks due to the extreme wildfire conditions, and giant slurry […]

Sandia Summer

I’m in Albuquerque this week, in the foothills of the Sandia mountains, enjoying a holiday with friends. And by friends, I mean the Texas Blue Scale Quail that inhabit the backyard: The exotic orange-eyed Curve-Billed Thrashers that hop about in the sage and the cone flowers: And the gorgeous roses. This is “Party Time,” an […]
